Safety Culture Seminar in Vocational High Schools

Workplace Health and Safety Culture Seminar was given to the students of İzmir Atatürk Organized Industrial Zone Nedim Uysal Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School students on the 8th, 9th and 10th of April 2019 by our Labor and Social Security Training Specialist Esra Karaman. A total of 416 students and 35 teachers attended our seminars which were given to 3 different groups of participants in 3 hour long sessions.

The need for safety for all living beings and the importance of this need among other needs was highlighted in the seminar. It was mentioned that “labor” is a fundamental right and duty of citizenship and general information was provided about the legal regulations made in this area.

It was underlined that the concept of “labor” wasn’t only a bread-winning element but it was also indispensable for the advancement of a society socially and economically and for the empowerment of individuals and families, and that such an advancement was only possible with “deeds befitting humanity”. It was specified that a job had to provide a fair wage, social security for the individual and their family, personal development opportunities and freedom of expression, and that it had to be a job where men and women benefited from equal opportunities for the job to be considered befitting the  honor of humanity. The concept  of workplace health and safety was taken into consideration from the viewpoint of a job being befitting humanity. Afterwards, the health and safety hazards people can encounter while working and the protective measures that have been developed from the past to present were explored in discussion. İzmir Atatürk Organized Industrial Zone Nedim Uysal Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School is a school that has embraced the fact that qualified workforce is a significant shortcoming of our industry and the fact that educated individuals are the greatest treasure for a country. The school offers its students a wide range of technical and social benefits with its Industrial Automation Technologies, Mechanical Technology and Electrical Electronic Technology Departments, its education environments compatible with industry 4.0 technology and wide internship network. The students were given general knowledge in the seminar to the students about the safety measures of the machinery, benches, hand tools and automation systems they would frequently encounter in the establishments where they would do their internships and they were given pointers on how to reach information on safety principles. The fact that  mass protective measures are important and effective and that safety in design is indispensable were emphasized for safe working environments within our industry which is striving to catch up to the industry 4.0 era. It’s important to impart the perspective of “safety” to the designers of future. We care about our “Safety Culture Seminars” which drives thought for safety in employees at every age and every level.
